Since late 2018, our super shells, shell extract for in our liquid Soaply and soap pumps are transported from ports in Asia to the Netherlands based on sustainable biofuel. These are 2nd generation biofuels, made from waste or residual streams. In this way, we prevent about 1,106 kg of CO2 emissions on an annual basis. An important step towards a clean future!
We partner with The GoodShipping Program, which aims to change the norm in shipping, from fossil to sustainable biofuel. Seepje purchases just enough biofuel, to sustainably furnish the journey of over 14,000 km. This biofuel is made available to the shipping industry. So while we cannot guarantee that this fuel will actually end up in our boat, we are sending a clear message to the shipping industry: we want to ship our goods sustainably.
Impact Hero Ilse explains, “Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a greenhouse gas and one of the main causes of climate change. In 2018, transporting the shells, extract and soap pumps had emissions of approximately 1,106 kg CO2. That is roughly equivalent to driving from Amsterdam to Groningen by car 52 times! That’s not great… As a carrier, that is Seepje, we pay 0.15 euros extra per kilogram to ship sustainably. But as far as we are concerned, it is well worth it.”
Of course, we consciously choose to have our super shells come to the Netherlands from the other side of the world. Our demand for the peels, on the one hand, enables us to do something good for the environment in Nepal in the form of nature conservation, and on the other hand, we strive to realize a livable income for the shell farmers.
